As you would correctly predict, many of the museums in Rotterdam are grouped around the Museumpark (Museum Park) area and the city centre itself, along with a series of good art galleries. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is Rotterdam's highly acclaimed art museum and amongst the very best that the Netherlands has to offer, and perhaps Europe.

With a vast collection covering all eras of Dutch art and more besides, this gallery contains countless famous pieces, such as the Nymph by Titian, and Rembrandt's Man in the Red Cap. Other notable art galleries in Rotterdam include the Kunsthal, which lies at the southern end of the Museumpark, close to the dyke. Each year, around 20 different temporary exhibitions visit the Kunsthal, which is actually a rather impressive building in its own right.




The Maritime Museum Rotterdam is otherwise known as the Maritime Museum and offers a range of explanatory displays relating to the city's harbour, with some beautiful models and artefacts. Close by, the Openlucht Binnenvaart contains a large collection of boats, filling a large area of the basin. Restoration of historic boats here is ongoing and can be observed close up.

Photographers should not miss the Nederlands Fotomuseum, while for history about Rotterdam and the Netherlands, the Het Schielandshuis is the place to be.
